What’s So Special About Abraham’s Believing?

What is the believing of Abraham? We know from the scriptures that Abraham’s believing resulted in having righteousness counted unto him. So, what was so special about Abraham’s believing? Let’s see what we can learn from Romans chapter 4.

Romans 4:3
For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

In chapter 4 of Romans God is showing by an example that righteousness (or justification) comes simply by believing God, not by works. Abraham is a prime example because the scriptures say in Genesis 15 that Abraham was made righteous – that was before the law was ever given. It was even said of him before he was circumcised. No works of the flesh could have been the source for his justification.

It should also be noted that righteousness didn’t come because Abraham believed something about God, nor just because he believed in God. Righteousness was accounted unto him because he believed God’s Word.

Romans 4:20-22
He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.

Abraham believed God when God promised him the impossible. He took God at His word. Abraham was fully persuaded that what God had promised, even though it looked impossible, God was able to bring it to pass.

Romans 4:23-25
Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; Who was delivered for our offenses, and was raised again for our justification.

Here is a promise from God to you. It is coming to you just as clear as Abraham received his promise from God. Like Abraham, are you going to take God at His word? Are you not merely going to believe in God, but do you believe what He says? God says we shall have righteousness (justification) laid to our account (just like Abraham) if we believe on Him concerning the resurrection of Jesus our Lord.

Romans 10:9
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Abraham believed in a promise that was still a future reality that he would never see with his own eyes. All we have to do is believe in a promise that God has already accomplished in the past. When you are justified by believing, today you get to manifest the accomplished realities of that promise.

The believing of Abraham is to believe what God says.
